Fiction Sample: "Duck, Duck, Goose"

Duck lady started laughing. Daisy laughed too, but was unsure what they were laughing about.

Duck lady rolled down her window and motioned for Daisy to roll down hers too. Daisy locked the door and cracked the window.

“I promise I don’t bite!” duck lady said.

Daisy rolled the window down all the way.

“But do you steal groceries?” Daisy said. Of all the categories she had for responding to people appropriately, this woman did not fall in any of them. And Daisy did not know what to do.

            “Only once.”

            Silence.

“Last week actually. I wanted to know how it felt. It felt pretty good.”

Duck lady looked away so Daisy did too.

“When you only have a month to live, you have to do something fun. What else can they do to me, you know?”

“I’m so sorry,” Daisy said, relieved by a social cue she recognized and had a plan for. “What do you have?”

“Two loaves of bread and a pack of toothpaste.”

Duck lady buckled her seatbelt and started her car.

“Gotta go to a doctor’s appointment! See you later!”

She left as quickly as she popped up from the laid down front seat. She didn’t even fix it before she left.
